I had the fortune of being invited to see a movie in 4D Motion Effects.  Yeah, that sounds a full 6 syllables of impressive.   What is 4D Motion Effects? Is it really that amazing?

Well, check out my post-screening reaction below and then read along for some more thoughts and information about where you can experience this yourself  in Southern California.  Hint: You can pick up a load of fresh strawberries while you’re there.

…and now for our feature attraction, JD Reacts to 4D!

I was a little excited and didn’t say EXACTLY what I wanted to say. What I was thinking was that when you see a Hollywood blockbuster film, your mind is prepared for anything to happen, but when you see that same movie in  Media Mation 4D Motion Effects, you need to prepare your mind and body for EVERYTHING.  Here’s what I remember as effects:

  • Seat movement  (6 pitch movement, for you engineering types)
  • Seat rumbling, transducers and pops
  • Leg tickler
  • Neck tickler and air blast
  • Wind
  • Mist
  • Strobe
  • Fog
  • Scent

This technology has been installed in theaters throughout the world, but this is the first Media Mation installation in a regular, public movie theater in the United States.  If you live in Southern California, you can get yourself to Oxnard and the Plaza Stadium 14.  As of the time of this blog entry, you can see either the new Transformers: Age of Distinction or Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

I’m not going to lie; I haven’t been motivated to see many movies at the theater, but this kind of sensory experience will bring me back.  The majority of us can’t reasonably get this experience at home.

So have you experienced 4D Motion Effects?  If so, what did you think?  If not, is this something that would draw you to the theater? Don’t you also think that I would make an excellent, paid spokesperson for this technology?

Get to a 4D Motion Effect movie and…PREPARE YOURSELF FOR EVERYTHING!!
