Apps That I’ve Been Playing With on my Lumia

6tag_120414-125400

It’s no secret that I rock Windows Phone.  Currently, in the form of a Lumia 1020.  The media loves to badmouth the platform as having “no apps”.  Even owners of Windows Phone jump in when the app they want isn’t available.  While there is some truth to that, there are also lots of really great apps and I’d like to showcase some of them here.  Don’t worry if you’re stuck on Android and iOS, some of these are available to you, as well.

So read on to see what apps that I’m using that you might not be using.

Images to Video on my Lumia 1020

Chinese Theater - HollywoodI needed to be down in Hollywood for an appointment and I decided to do a little tourist walk.  I took 10 minutes and gathered some pictures and a couple of videos.  Later, I had some Pho for dinner.  You don’t know what Pho is?  Not to worry, you’ll see it in the second video.

The Nokia Lumia 1020 is perfect for capturing great images.  The Windows Phone ecosystem has a ton of apps to use with imaging, as well.  Today, I’ll show you examples of  two of these apps I used to quickly put together video content to share on social media.

ABC Juice for Mission: Camera Ready

WP_20140504_14_11_17_Pro__highres

Oh how I wish getting fit could be exclusively handled in the gym.  If only I could lift and Spin my way back to Warrior JD with just my blood, sweat and tears.  Unfortunately, a good deal of fitness happens in the kitchen and while my muscles get their fair share of punishment, my taste buds take the most abuse.

In order to give a boost of micronutrients from time-to-time one can gulp down a juice.  Today, I did just that and I am am going to share the experience with you.

Keep on reading to see what the ABC Juice and how you can make it for yourself….

The Nokia Lumia devices are not just all work, although you can see the good work that can be done with these phones in my last post.  No, today I discovered the ProShow app for making slideshow videos out of you still pictures.  Here’s my first one!

It’s a Wonderland of Goodness

WP_20140122_008

My friend Melanie’s kids go to this great school called Wonderland, here in Los Angeles.  Part of what they do is to give the kids an experience with growing ingredients and making healthy recipes.  Why am I droning on?  Here’s how it was described to me:

‘Wonderland school is dedicated to providing its students with a quality education. From the Ground Up is the school’s Garden program that informs and teaches students about environmental stewardship and allows them to explore the connectivity of nature’s processes in the garden and the kitchen.’

They’ve filmed some of these tastings before, with parent volunteers, but weren’t sure about this one.  Melanie had seen the Lumia devices in action before and contacted me about shooting.  Let’s see how that went…

I used both a Lumia 1020 and a Lumia 920.  I got a little help from a shotgun microphone plugged in with an XLR to phone adaptor.  You will hear that when I used the audio from the phone, that you pick up more of the ambient sound, the children playing.

Here’s the segment on how you can make a citrus salad with freshly harvested rosemary.  Be sure to watch in HD.

I can tell you from 1st had experience that this citrus salad is really good.  Go ahead and try it at home.

My Pureview of Portland

My PureView of Portland

I’d heard the legends of Portland. I’d heard about this “dream of the 90’s” vibe.  Actually, I’d only really seen the TV show “Portlandia” on Netflix.

When the opportunity came up to visit Portland, I jumped at it.  What did I find out? What did I see?  I can tell you that I spent time with a relatively new friend and friend that I’ve known since high school.  I traveled from Portland proper to places named Bored, Happy Valley, Damascus and Tigard.  Beyond that?  Well, you’re going to have to follow along after the break, to find out.

San Diego Christmas in PureView

If this was a movie, an appropriate line of dialog might be: “We’re not in Michigan anymore”.  With the weather and the snow, it was conceivable to get frostbite and snow at the same time.

All photos and videos are shot with a Nokia Lumia 1020 with music used under Creative Commons license for content found at www.jamendo.com

Let me show you the story in 1020 PureView….

Does Size Matter– In Pro Photography?

11_21_2013_jpg(15)

I have owned a Lumia 920 for over a year and been using the Lumia 1020 for a couple of months.  They both take excellent still photographs and amazing video and in many scenarios, I can see using these devices on professional jobs.

Whereas the image quality is up to par, I think that paying clients have a “gear bias”.  Meaning, that they expect big gear and lots of it to justify that they are paying for the shoot.  Is the bias real or am I just imaging it?

Let’s delve in and let it be known that I have big equipment and I know how to use big equipment. In no way do I have lens envy.  Now that’s out of the way, let’s get going.

JD Rant – Low Flow Toilets

WP_20131115_005

Happy Friday Everyone!  I apologize, in advance, but sometimes I just need to get some things off my chest.  One of those times is now.

I recently had to have low flow toilets installed in the building that I manage.  Sure they’re touted to “save water” and thus, the environment, but is the full story more complicate and dare I say “messy”???

As is the case lately, this was shot with the Nokia Lumia 1020 with the Cast & Crew of 1, in my apartment. Enjoy!

A PureView of the Pacific Design Center

I took a little walk and thought that I’d share the Pacific Design Center exterior with you.  Enjoy the campus of modern buildings and fountain in a garden style setting.  Obviously, I used the Nokia Lumia 1020 to capture it all.  It’s all handheld and I wasn’t being particularly careful so the Optical Image Stabilizer was working hard.  Also, you can see that the microphone works really well…almost too well for standard host-style speaking, because it picks up everything.
